Kelly Shaffer has been practicing law in San Diego County for over sixteen years, all of them devoted to the practice of family law. Her commitment to helping families stems from her study of psychology in college. She knew even then that she wanted to work in an area of the law in which she could serve people, not corporations or other big businesses. With this in mind, Kelly volunteered for the Domestic Violence Program and Southern Arizona Legal Aid while in law school. Also during law school, she was selected to serve as a judicial law clerk, which allowed her to gain a valuable judicial perspective on family law matters.
California family law is a complex and ever-evolving practice area. For this reason, Kelly deliberately limits the firm's practice to this aspect of the law. She believes that concentrating on family law allows the firm's attorneys to excel in this area, offering the firm's clients the most up-to-date knowledge and best possible advocacy for what is likely the most important legal matter of their lives.
Kelly enjoys being able to learn about her clients and their unique stories, and to make a sometimes overwhelming situation easier for them. Clients have said that having Kelly take the time to really listen to them and understand their issues makes the legal process less intimidating. Kelly knows that when people feel heard and informed, they feel empowered to deal with even the most stressful circumstances.
Understanding client needs is an important part of advocacy, and Kelly believes that it is equally important to be skilled in providing a variety of services designed to serve each client's particular situation. Kelly works diligently to help her clients reach positive resolution in family law cases by agreement. She also knows, however, that sometimes the best incentive for an opposing party to come to agreement is the knowledge that if they don't, they will be facing a formidable opponent at trial. Kelly believes in over-preparing for trial, so that she can be the powerful advocate her clients need and deserve.
Kelly's goal for her clients is that when their cases are resolved they will look back on the process as less difficult than they feared, and the outcome as better than they hoped.
